WEBSITE DESIGN

Web Design & Development in Winnipeg

Your website is your digital front door. If it looks messy, loads slowly or acts like a brochure from 2008—it’s doing the opposite of its job. At Rocket Science Designs, I build websites for small businesses, startups and growing brands in Winnipeg, Manitoba and across Canada that are visually polished, technically sound and designed to earn trust and conversions.

Why a smart website matters

Because your customers’ attention span is shorter than your loading time. Because mobile, tablet and desktop all demand their say—and one site must serve them all. Because design without function is decoration, not a tool. And in a competitive market (local & national), a website that *works* matters just as much as one that *looks* good.

What I bring to the table

I merge design craftsmanship, development precision and strategic thinking into every build. You’ll get: a site that reflects your brand, performs reliably, is maintainable, and keeps you in control—not locked into endless agency fees.

  • Responsive build that looks great on all devices
  • Optimised for performance and fast loading times
  • User-flow and layout designed for clarity and action
  • SEO-friendly structure and best practices from day one — clean markup, fast loading, proper heading hierarchy, and schema where it counts
  • Design system or style guide so future updates stay consistent
  • Training or documentation so you’re not stuck waiting on someone else

A note on AIO: AI-powered search (Google’s AI Overviews, ChatGPT, and similar) is changing how people find and evaluate businesses online. The way these systems work, well-structured content, clear authorship, and proper schema markup matter more than ever. It’s an emerging area I’m actively working in and building into every project — not as a buzzword, but as a practical part of how I build.

The process

1. Discovery & Planning

We’ll clarify your goals, define your audience, audit competitors and map the features you need now and soon.

2. Design & Prototype

Wireframes or mock-ups give you a feel for layout, navigation and structure. Then we refine visuals so your brand shines and your user loves it.

3. Build & Launch

From theme setup or custom build, we develop the site, test it (responsiveness, browser compatibility, performance) and launch it smoothly.

4. Training, Support & Rollout

You’ll receive documentation/training, checklists for launch, and guidance on how to maintain and update your site without confusion.

Who this is for

FAQ

Common Questions

Should I hire a freelancer or an agency?

For most small businesses, a freelancer with the right experience is the better fit — you get direct communication with the person actually doing the work, no account managers or hand-offs, and better value for the budget. The legitimate concern with freelancers is reliability. The honest answer to that is: check their track record, ask direct questions about process, and look for someone who’s been doing this long enough that ghosting mid-project isn’t in their interest. I’ve been at this for 20+ years. Unfinished projects aren’t part of my business model.

How long does a website build take?

A typical small business site runs 3–5 weeks from kickoff to launch-ready, assuming content and brand assets are ready to go. The most common cause of delays isn’t the build — it’s waiting on copy, photos, and feedback from the client’s side. Coming prepared makes a real difference.

What do you need from me to get started?

At minimum: a clear idea of what the site needs to do, any existing brand assets (logo, colours, fonts), and the content or a plan for getting it. If you don’t have copy or photography sorted, that’s fine — I can help with both — but it’s worth knowing upfront so we can scope it properly.

Will I be able to update the site myself after launch?

Yes, with some limitations. I build in PHP, not WordPress, which means you won’t have a drag-and-drop editor — but the tradeoff is a faster, cleaner site with no plugin maintenance. I document everything and build pages so routine content changes are straightforward. For anything structural, I’m available for ongoing work.

Do you use templates or build custom?

Custom. No bloat, no unnecessary dependencies, no page builders, no recycled layouts. Every site is hand-coded to fit the project. That’s part of why they load fast and stay maintainable — there’s nothing underneath that isn’t there on purpose.

What does a website cost?

Scope varies too much for a single number to be useful, but a straightforward small business site typically falls in the $3,000–$6,000 range. More complex builds with ecommerce, custom functionality, or multiple content types run higher. I work on project pricing, so you’ll always know the number before work starts.
